Icons Library

About the project

Across every Telefónica website and product, we encountered a challenge – each had its own unique iconography, which ended up diluting our brand's identity. We realized that no existing icon library could fulfill all our requirements, so we took matters into our own hands and developed an entirely new set of icons from the ground up.

To address the specific needs of Telefonica, such as big data and cybersecurity, we sought to expand our iconography. However, acquiring a license for company-wide icon usage was not a viable option due to the considerable associated costs.

As a solution, we cleverly decided to adopt Movistar's visual style as a guide to craft our own distinct and cohesive icon proposal.

This strategic move not only saved us resources but also unified our brand's appearance, projecting a strong and consistent image to our audience.

Following Movistar's allowed us to leverage the familiarity and recognition already associated with Movistar's visual identity while giving us the freedom to tailor the icons specifically for the big data and cybersecurity domains.

Working in small increments during our available time slots, we embarked on the process of designing and refining each icon. Collaborative discussions and feedback sessions were held to ensure that the final icons aligned with Telefónica's visual style

My role

As the project supervisor, I took on the responsibility of overseeing the expansion of Telefónica's iconography while actively contributing to its development.

In order to ensure the iconography aligned with the needs of other designers and product owners, I maintained communication with them and identified the most relevant icons for creation. Based on their feedback, I prioritized the creation of a list of essential icons that needed to be developed first.

I also provided mentorship to the junior designers, supporting them to grow their skills with Adobe Illustrator. I diligently reviewed each icon, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious visual appearance across the entire set.

Grid

We started with the curve grid already defined in the Brand Guidelines and established the square grid.

The three variants we defined were categorized by their thicknesses: 1px, 2px, and Fill, each serving specific design needs and scenarios. This approach resulted in a cohesive and adaptable icon set, adapted to various scenarios seamlessly.

Icon Library

Over time, we expanded the icon library, curating it into themed categories for improved accessibility. We emphasized categories like Navigation, Security, Internet, and Data, creating a whole new set of icons

To gather feedback, we initiated a sharing process within the company, circulating the icons among Designers via Sketch. The outcome surpassed our expectations as our coworkers embraced the iconography with great enthusiasm and appreciation

Use of Telefónica Icons

The result was a comprehensive set of custom icons that addressed Telefonica's specific needs without breaking the bank. These icons became invaluable tools for internal and external communications, facilitating the visual representation of complex concepts and helping users navigate the ever-evolving landscape of big data and cybersecurity. We made available to everyone a library with more than 400 icons that continue to grow every day.

The icons can be downloaded in all their variants from the website of Telefonica's Brand Factory website.
